How does the skill tree work in Path of Exile 2?
Summary
Q.How does the skill tree work in Path of Exile 2?
A.Path of Exile 2 uses a single, massive passive skill tree (class-specific start positions plus Ascendancies) alongside a reworked gem system where skill gems are slotted on your character and support gems are socketed into those skills to modify them.
More info
Path of Exile 2’s skill system is two-part: a large shared passive skill tree you spend level-up points into, and a new gem-based active-skill system where skills and their supports are managed from a gem interface. Each of the 12 classes starts at a different location on the passive tree and earns one passive point per level; Ascendancy subclasses (unlocked via the Labyrinth) give powerful, class-unique nodes. Active Skill Gems are socketed into your character (not into equipment) and have dedicated support sockets you fill with Support Gems to change behavior or boost damage. In practice that means you map out long passive routes for stat clusters or keystones, while building skills by combining a Skill Gem with up to several Support Gems (you can increase support sockets with Jeweler’s Orbs). Support gems are unique (you can’t socket the same support in two different skills), and meta gems can trigger multiple sockets under conditions. You can respec passive points later (through an NPC unlocked in Act 1) but Ascendancy and late-game respecs are more costly, so planning matters. For details on Ascendancy unlocking and respec mechanics see the Ascendancy guide and the respec overview. (poe2db.info)
