Summary

Q.How does artillery work in Factorio and how do I use it effectively?

A.Artillery in Factorio is a long-range defense/offense tool built from artillery turrets (static) or wagons (mobile). It can fire automatically at enemy bases or be directed manually with an artillery targeting remote, but it requires careful ammo logistics and defenses.

More info

Artillery in Factorio comes in two forms: artillery turrets (static emplacements) and artillery wagons (train-mounted). In automatic mode they scan for enemy structures within range and fire; in manual mode you fire at a location you designate with an artillery targeting remote. There is a minimum range of 32 tiles, with automatic range at 224 tiles and manual range at 560 tiles; infinite artillery range research adds +30% to both. Artillery shells are ammunition with a stack size of 1, and both turret and wagon loads are limited (turret holds 15 shells, wagon 100), so you must supply shells via inserters or local loading. For the core details, see the official wiki pages on artillery turrets and the artillery targeting remote: Artillery turret and Artillery targeting remote.
